How Clarifying Intent Revitalized One Client’s Mobility Strategy

Our multi-national, chemical manufacturer client had experienced a dramatic decline in global mobility activity in recent years. Despite offering diverse mobility solutions for their business units, these programs were underutilized—even considering remote work trends and company spinoffs.

The challenge? Raising the visibility and perceived value of their global mobility offerings. With the right tools in place, they needed a strategy to attract the right customers and drive engagement.

We’ve been seeing our organization change a lot in terms of volume and also in terms of how our businesses are utilizing mobility.

Employing our customer insight surveys and focus groups, we captured the full story of the mobility program through the experiences of relocated employees, assignees, HR leaders, and business leaders. While the benefits were seen as generous and well-received, we discovered significant confusion about which of the 20 policies applied to specific mobility scenarios—an understandable challenge given the complexity.

Through their Studio, the client determined a need to identify the intent of a move or assignment as the framework for creating a core flex mobility program. Talent movement would be defined as one of the following:

  • A critical deployment
  • A strategic deployment
  • A developmental deployment

Once the business determined the intent of a move, they could confidently select the appropriate policy and offer employees a customized list of flex benefits to meet their unique needs.

To support this shift, Weichert partnered with the client to deliver a comprehensive webinar introducing stakeholders to the new mobility program, including clear definitions of intent and policy structure. Supplemental training materials and Q&A sessions ensured alignment and understanding between HR and business leaders.

Leveraging the Studio, the client reduced the end-to end data collection and program design process from six months to just eight weeks—demonstrating the power of adaptability in driving global mobility success!

We’re fortunate to work with a client that proactively planned for their workforce needs—but every organization will face business or product shifts that demand agility. To stay ahead, companies need a flexible program that accommodates various business needs and budgets, along with technology that adapts to stakeholder demands.

The biggest surprise was the methodology itself. The close, constant interaction with the Weichert team with the opportunity to bring ideas in and have the experts turn them into something realistic has allowed us to get where we wanted to go in a structured way, as opposed to traditional project management where the experts propose what they believe is more suitable for the company.

The bottom line: More policies don’t always mean more flexibility! True flexibility for your mobility program is about being streamlined and concise, offering a well-defined range of options to meet every need—without the complexity.
